Workman Township Updates

2020 CENSUS:  The 2020 Census will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2020. There is much work that is necessary before the census. Many temporary jobs are available including many in central and NE Minnesota. For additional information call 1-855-JOB-2020 or go to the 2020 Census Jobs webpage:  2020census.gov/en/jobs

MINNESOTA ASSOCIATION OF CEMETERIES:  Workman Township has joined the Minnesota Association of Cemeteries on behalf of Lakeview Cemetery. Joining with an experienced active association should enable our cemetery to gain access to expertise on cemetery responsibilities and activities that would lead to improvement in all areas of Lakeview Cemetery. The Association has a number of experienced professionals that we can call on to give our cemetery the best possible information.

SNOW PLOW TRUCK:  Workman Township has recently purchased a used snowplow truck from the Minnesota Highway Department. The truck is equipped with a front blade that can angle either right-left-straight, a snow wing, and a device to spread a sand/salt mix. Dealing with the department directly we were able to purchase the truck in what we felt was considerably below market price.

A significant amount of time was spent discussing equipment purchase and reviewing our snow removal costs from private contractors and our projected costs. Based on the last several winters we feel better service and lower costs could be obtained by having township equipment. Our goal is to have our township roads cleared of snow as quickly as possible for our citizens. The snowplow will only be used in Workman Township on township roads. Private driveways and roads will NOT be plowed. Citizens will need to continue to use private contractors for that service.

2019 MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM:  Beautiful patriotic music, played on the oboe by McGregor graduation Senior Kinsten Rought, and the Memorial Day respects at the grave of WW II Navy Veteran Olaf E. Taylor by the joint McGregor American Legion and VFW, along with their auxiliaries, highlighted our 3rd annual event. See photos and additional information on our Cemetery page. We are already making plans for the 2020 Memorial Day Program.

HIGHWAY UPDATE: Former MN State Hwy 232 which was given to Aitkin County several years ago by the State of Minnesota and was named Cty Rd 3, also 480th Street, was scheduled for completion this year after the highway from our townhall to Palisade was rebuilt and paved last year. The remainder to be completed was from our townhall east to MN Hwy 65, about three miles. Because of some delays in getting all land purchases completed and some environmental issues, the road will not be completed this year but is planned for completion in 2020 per the Aitkin County Highway Department.

TAXABLE MARKET VALUE & NET TAX CAPACITY:  For the assessment year 2018 / tax year payable 2019, the Workman Township total taxable market valuation is: $58,230.349. The Workman Township net capacity is: $578,397 (information from Aitkin County Auditor). The 2019 township levy as set by the electors at the annual meeting was $84,000, 14.5% of the township net capacity.

STRONG VOTER PARTICIPATION:  The November election resulted in 140 mail in ballots from our township. Considering that the last census showed our population of all age groups as 207 the number of eligible voters was certainly very favorable.

HIGH SPEED INTERNET:  While there has been some progress in high speed internet service, mainly along Highway 65 in Workman Township by SCI, there is still a lot of work to be done to have high speed internet in the entire township. Frontier Communications was scheduled to place high speed cable on Grouse Street from Hwy 65 to 240th Place in 2018. The work has not been completed and likely will be completed in 2019. We are planning on meeting with SCI, another cable company installing high speed internet cable in the area.

HELICOPTER LANDING ZONE:  Discussion with Aitkin County officials has begun concerning have an area designated for landing/takeoff for emergency medical helicopters. Workman Township will consult with other nearby townships and Aitkin County to determine what would be the most suitable location for this landing zone.
